Trail Therapy
Trail Therapy is an innovative intervention programme that seeks to use mountain biking in combination with more traditional therapy techniques to support those with a mental health challenge. Ewen’s Room offers blocks of therapy in locations around Lochaber. Contact us to enquire about current therapy sessions.
What is Trail Therapy?
We know from an ever-expanding body of research that the benefits of being outdoors in nature in combination with an activity that requires concentration can have profound physical and mental health benefits. Trail Therapy has been developed by a partnership of mountain bikers and occupational therapists to provide such a therapeutic interventions in a non-clinical setting, ie. outdoors and in the community.
A typical trail therapy session starts with a check-in, and a bike safety check. You will then set off on a mountain biking trail that is specifically chosen to match your experience level as a rider. You’ll practise different biking techniques, explore the local landscape and overcome challenges. Throughout the session, our therapists will prompt conversations, exercises and exploration. At the end of the session, you will wash down your bike and join the rest of the group for a hot drink, a biscuit and a debrief.
With the NHS under so much pressure, I really believe programmes like Trail Therapy can play a positive role in supporting mental wellbeing. We’ve taken what we’ve learned from Ewen’s Room’s open-door sessions and other services to create a safe, supportive space where people can connect, learn and build confidence over time. Cycling is part of that because it helps people slow down, connect with nature and open up — and you don’t need to be a cyclist or an athlete, just someone willing to give something new a try. (Natasha, Trail Therapist)
Who is Trail Therapy for?
Everyone benefits from going outside and getting active, but research has shown that especially those of us who have been struggling with poor mental health for some time find that Trail Therapy leads to lasting improvements in their Wellbeing. You do not need to have a medical diagnosis to participate but we will ask you to identify the reasons you wish to participate in a therapeutic programme when you register your interest.
Who delivers Trail Therapy?
We currently have two fully trainer Trail Therapists in our Team. This means that in addition to an intensive Trail Therapist Training Course they hold the following qualifications:
- MTB Guide qualification
- MTB Coaching qualification
- Mental Health First Aid
- Members of the PVG scheme
- Outdoor First Aid qualified
- Calum Swanson
- Natasha Angell
I first reached out for mental health support when I was 17, and at a time when help felt slow in coming and difficult to access, I found myself escaping onto my bike and into the woods. What started as a way to quiet my mind became something much more — cycling improved my mental and physical wellbeing, helped me build confidence, and connected me with others who understood. That lived experience is why I believe so strongly in Trail Therapy and the difference it can make for people in our local community. (Calum, Trail Therapist)
