WellBeing Champions
WellBeing Champions is a secondary school-based educational programme that aims to give young people the skills and knowledge they need to safeguard their mental health and that of their peers.
WellBeing Champions Training
This 6-hour programme is targeted towards young people aged 12 to 18. It is best delivered in two or three blocks ideally in groups of up to 15.
The lessons cover:
- The ways mental health is universal and present like physical health, and moves along a spectrum of wellbeing.
- The risk and protective factors to our mental health, including dispelling common myths around mental health.
- The ways to look after our mental health and wellbeing, and where to seek help when needed.
- The ways we can support our peers.
WellBeing Champions are provided with a workbook and a practical materials box that enables them to deliver practical peer support.
WellBeing Champions Peer Support
Ewen’s Room encourages their WellBeing Champions to support themselves and others following their training, depending on the need in their school. We are now supporting a number of current WellBeing Champions cohorts who are running a very successful weekly drop-in’s for all students at their school:
- At Ardnamurchan High School, WellBeing Champions meet on a Thursday lunchtime.
- At Kinlochleven High School, WellBeing Champions meet on Thursday lunchtimes in the library.
- At Mallaig High School, WellBeing Champions meet most Mondays at lunchtime.
These sessions provided a much-needed refuge for a number of young people at various times, and have helped individuals to build confidence particularly when new to the school. Our WellBeing Champions also provide support to individual pupils as and when required, and at all times, they are supervised by an experienced Education Officer who offers advise, support, additional training and steps in if required.
